The Dream
My daughter and I are in my kitchen talking. I face the cook stove as if preparing food, but there is nothing on the stove cooking.
I hear the rumble of a motor cycle in front of my house, and think it must be our friend Bill coming to have lunch with us.
Suddenly, Christina begins screaming ...
"My God, what's wrong," I stammer, as I whirl around to face her.
Christina, ashen faced, leaned weakly against the table and stared at the man who now stood in the middle of the floor. He wore brown cover-all's and looked as if someone had attacked him. His face was bloody and swollen, and his clothes were tattered and torn in various places.
I could see the bone in his right leg protruding through the cover-all's.
Somehow, I recognized the man as Bill and rushed to him just as he collapsed to the floor.
End of dream:
I awoke in a sweat, heart racing wildly at **11:05 am
The Reality
Date: 'November 5th', 1991 {**11-05}
4:30 pm / I phoned ** Bill and invited him down for pizza with Mike and me. He accepted and said he would ride the ** motor cycle down.
4:40 pm / I phoned Domino's and ordered the pizza.
5:10 pm / ** I stood in the kitchen, facing the cook stove, and looked up at the clock on the wall.
My husband stood beside the kitchen table and looked through an advertisement of some type that lay on the table.
"I wonder why our pizza hasn't arrived yet, and where the heck is Bill?" I asked as I glanced at the clock again.
**Suddenly, the air was filled with the sounds of **a motor cycle, skidding tires, brakes **screaming, gravel flying and a loud crashing sound coming from the **direction of our front yard and drive-way area.
**"My God, what was that?" I cried as I whirled to face Mike, who was still standing beside the table.
Mike raced for the front door ...
"Call the rescue squad, quick," he yelled over his shoulder as he went out the door.
I could see the crumpled remains of a motor cycle in my front yard as I dialed the number for the squad.
I turned from the phone just as Mike came back through the door requesting a heavy blanket.
**"Is it Bill?" I asked even as I reached for my fur unicorn blanket that always lay over the back of the couch.
"No, it isn't Bill, but the guy is hurt pretty bad," Mike replied.
I clung tightly to the unicorn blanket, pushed past Mike and ** raced toward the man who lay on the ground in our front yard.
"Don't move. Lay still, the rescue squad is on its way. Put your hands down ... no, you are not taking that helmet off, now lay still."
I barked out orders as neighbors began gathering in our yard.
Andrea came running with her nurses kit, while I continued to kneel beside the injured man and hold his hand.
A Dream Fulfilled
The motor cycle rider wore ** brown cover-all's and was injured badly. The cover-all's were tattered and torn in various places, and blood oozed from his face and hands.
He was very concerned about his ** right leg, and asked repeatedly if it "was still there." I answered each time that it was still there but until we got the pant leg cut away I could not tell the extent of the injury to the leg.
"You wouldn't lie to me, would you?" he pleaded.
"No, I have a brother (Charlee) who lost a leg when he was seventeen years old, and I know what it means. I would never lie to you. If the leg was missing I would tell you so," I replied as I continued to hold his hand and try to comfort him.
His name was Robert Willis Shaw. He was heading south on state route 555 {toward the highway} just as the pizza delivery driver { a girl about Christina's age} was heading north and turning into our drive-way. Shaw popped up over the blind spot and could not stop the cycle, although he gave it one hell of a try.
His front wheel had caught the back bumper of the car, and ripped it completely off the car. The bumper lay midway between the road and our front porch, while the many pieces of the cycle lay scattered across the yard, and Shaw had nearly cleared the entire yard!
He had sailed through the air for more than 50 feet before coming to rest near the road.
The Paramedics
As soon as the paramedics arrived, I was back to barking out orders.
"Cut that pant leg off so I can tell him the extent of the injuries to that right leg," I said.
They did as instructed, and then began looking at me quite strangely as I rattled off his injuries.
"It is severely injured, and broken in three places that I can see. There is some "outside" bleeding and a lot of internal bleeding. The thigh bone is shattered and protruding through the skin. It is quite bad, but the leg is still there and can be repaired," I told him.
"Are you a nurse?" one of the paramedics asked.
"No, Andrea is the nurse," I replied as they hoisted Shaw onto the stretcher.
I continued to hold his hand and walked to the ambulance with him. Then I gave his hand one final squeeze and removed the unicorn blanket so the paramedics could cover him with their own blankets.
"It's going to be okay," I smiled.
"Are you sure?" he asked one last question, and I nodded my answer as they shut the door.
At The Hospital
My friend Julia is an Anesthesiologist, and the next day she phoned to tell me about a young man that she administered anesthesia to as he was brought in for surgery.
She said the man was badly injured and in horrible pain but that he insisted on telling her and the doctors a story before he was put under for the surgery.
She said he told of his accident and a very special lady named Bonnie, whose front yard he ended up in, and how she had stayed by his side every second and had told him what his injuries were and how bad they were.
Julia said she told him....
"Oh Mr. Shaw, you met our Bonnie. She's not quite an angel, but she's pretty close."
She said he smiled and nodded his agreement as he went to sleep for the surgery.
** His girlfriend would later call and thank me for what I did for Mr. Shaw, and later still his attorney called and thanked me.
