I've Been Wanting To See You

Cider

My sister and I went to the Wal-Mart store by the Mall, and had just turned down the pet supply isle in search of my weekly supply of canned food for my seven cats, each of which insisted they would starve to death on dry food, when I heard a familiar voice.

Although it had been more than twelve years since I'd seen Betty, I still recognized her voice when I heard it.

"Betty?" I said as I moved closer to the lady who had been apologizing for leaving her cart in the center of the isle while she selected something from the shelf.

I knew when she looked at me that she did not recognize me. "Bonnie .... I'm Bonnie Wells," I said as I smiled at her.

"Oh Bonnie, I've been wanting to see you!" Betty exclaimed.

I let the comment slide although I wondered why she had been "wanting to see me."

I'd never known of Betty to be involved in any kind of "psychic" work, and as far as I knew she knew absolutely nothing about my involvement in any of the unsolved crimes that I insisted on working, even though my efforts never seemed to accomplish anything.

I inquired about her husband and learned that he had passed away last July. I was very sorry to hear that. He was a wonderful person and I knew Betty would be very lonely without him. Perhaps that's why she had been wanting to see me, I thought as I listened to her comments about the illness that had eventually taken his life.

I was still listening .... and yet, I was trying to remember what I was doing just a few days earlier when I'd thought of Betty and wondered what she was doing nowadays. I couldn't recall, and yet I remembered thinking of her and her husband, and even wondering if they still lived where they had lived years ago.

We talked for quite some time there in the cat food section .... in fact we talked so long my feet felt as if they had turned to lead! But I still had no clue as to why Betty had been wanting to see me!

Finally, I told Betty that I'd love to continue our conversation, but not tonight! I just had to get off my feet and sit down for awhile. Besides, my little dog Copper was waiting in the car for me. She was good as gold, but even so I didn't like to leave her in the car for hours at a time. Besides that she was probably cold .....even though she had two blankets she could "cover up" with in the car.

Murder? Murder! Did The Woman Say Murder?

Cider

My sister was looking at me as if she was ready to send in the Marines, and Betty was still talking about her husband as I ventured a couple of steps away from her.

"Please, give me a call when you get a chance or come down and visit anytime you want to," I smiled as I tried to move in Patty's direction again.

"Do you know where *Lo________ Road is?" I heard Betty asking me.

No, I didn't know .....had never heard of it.

They passed it as she took her husband back and forth to the hospital in Athens .... she continued.

"I wanted to go back down there .... there is something there ......something connected to that cop's wife's murder...." she continued as she clutched at my sleeve.

"Murder ..... Murder!! Did the woman say murder?"

Now she had my undivided attention, and to hell with my lead feet .....Patty could wheel me out in the cart on top of all the animal supplies!!!!

"Where is this road?" I asked

"In Athens County .... like you are coming back this way from Guysville. It's right in that area where a little service station sat years ago. Do you know where I'm talking about?" Betty replied.

I knew where the service station had once sat, but what could that area have to do with the murder of Jenifer McCrady? That's the "cop's wife" that she spoke of, and Jenifer was found in Washington County, just a short distance from my home.

Again I tried to verify the area, thinking she was mistaken about it being in Athens County. She insisted it was right in that area where the service station had been twenty five (or more) years ago.

"What could that area have to do with Jenifer's murder? She was found in Little Hocking, Betty. How could that area be connected?" I questioned.

"I don't know what it is Bonnie. That's what I'm trying to tell you. There is something there that has something to do with her death ......some connection. That's why I wanted to go back, but I've never gotten to do that. Maybe we could drive down that way sometime and look around." She replied.

Remember The Father And His Land

This woman knew absolutely nothing about any of my work. I even asked if she had a computer and was told no, so I reasoned she could not have been "monitoring" this web site and following my stories (like some are doing.)

How could she know? She couldn't and didn't. I questioned her enough to realize that she knew none of the people involved, none of the information I'd worked with for years and years ..... and yet, she was directing me to an area that I knew quite well.

Although the service station is long gone, there is still a pay phone located where an old style phone booth had once stood. I remembered that phone booth. It was there that Wild Bill had been seen making phone calls to someone.

"I'm sorry Betty, but I really do have to go. My sister needs to get home and my dog is waiting for me in the car. But please .... please call me or come down because I really do want to continue this conversation." I said as I moved away from her.

I was about half way to the end of the isle when Betty once again tugged on my sleeve. I stopped to hear what she wanted to tell me.

"Remember the father and his land," she whispered.

"Huh?" I replied, dumbfounded!

She repeated the same words in another whisper.

"Oh, okay ....okay, I'll remember." I whispered back.

"What was that woman talking about?" Patty asked after we finally made it to my vehicle.

I wasn't sure the woman actually knew what she was talking about .... in fact I was pretty sure she had not a clue as to what she had just told me.

That Cop's Wife

Cider

Jenifer McCrady had been murdered in September of 1996. Her State Trooper husband had been arrested for her murder in early October of 1996. Had nothing else happened after that, I might not have questioned so many things involving the "McCrady" case. But things did happen. Things that seemed to fit right into the McCrady case. Things that Jackie McCrady could not possibly have been involved in because he was sitting in jail awaiting trial.

*Wild Bill had already told one of his live-in girlfriends to "get off his property, and leave the rings on the kitchen counter on her way out the door." I thought that was incredibly strange considering Jenifer McCrady's rings were found on the kitchen counter after she disappeared. Still, everyone said it was a coincidence, so I assume they know what they are talking about.

Jackie had also said that the last time he'd heard Jenifer in their home was when he awoke to the sound of the shower running.

This had reminded me of the phone calls that "*Gail" had received ..... from that pay phone that Betty had just mentioned to me!

In those phone calls, the caller.....a man.....had threatened *Gail and told her he was coming to her house (which is less than three minutes away from the pay phone) and he was going to take a shower with her, and then he had a few other "treats" in mind for her.

Gail insisted she didn't know who this caller was, but he told her several times that he had met her at a yard sale in Little Hocking.

Of course in the McCrady trial, (in 1997) those in the court room heard the possibility that the comforter Jenifer McCrady was found wrapped in might have been sold at a "yard sale." And of course she was found in "Little Hocking." Again I thought it was a clue or a connection, but again I was wrong. It was just another coincidence.

No Coincidence

Cider

However, it was no "coincidence" that my friend T.H. got arrested for burglary! Then again, perhaps it was a coincidence. Perhaps the fact that he resembled Wild Bill enough to fool his own attorney was the coincidence in all of it!

On October 16th, 1996 ..... some two weeks after Jackie McCrady's arrest ..... a man phoned "*Gail" with more threats. The only difference was.....this time he followed through with his threats. Within minutes he was coming through the woman's door .......which reminds me......I always wondered why she didn't lock her door when he told her he was coming to her house.

Apparently none of the cops involved thought this was a legitimate question, because it was never asked of the woman. Nor did they seem to think something else I told them was worth their time .... T. H. does not go to "yard sales," but Wild Bill does!

As a matter of fact, I discovered one of my own Halloween creations sitting on the front porch of *Gail's best friend's mother's house! It took awhile, but I finally found the connection between Wild Bill and *Gail. It was her friend "*The Cupcake/Little Debbie," whom Wild Bill sneaked around with until her boyfriend caught them one morning and beat the mortal hell out of him ..... And I missed it!!!

No one else seemed interested in the "connections," but I was. I'd always been interested. Besides that, I knew for a fact those yard decorations that Wild Bill and I had made together were sold at "yard sales" at his house! I knew exactly how it had all transpired, and I had a pretty good idea of who drove the white car that I saw meeting Wild Bill in Belpre on more than one occasion!

Honest Mistake - Or Deliberate Scheme?

Cider

On November 1st, 1996 T. H. was shopping at a local store when the "victim" (Gail....not her real name) saw him and made a beeline for the nearest police station, where she gave a positive id on T. H. as the man who had been phoning her for some (six) years!!! with threats of raping her, and other things that no one would tell! She insisted that it was T. H. who had busted into her home on October 16th. So, local authorities did what they do best. They arrested T. H. and took him to the Athens Sheriff's Department where he was held for hours while they interrogated him, and tried their best to intimidate him into a "confession!".

T. H. just happens to be a disabled veteran and is incapable of the actions that the woman claimed he performed ..... like fleeing from her house and across the deck, jumping to the ground and running full speed toward his parked vehicle.

He has endured three major surgeries on his back and in each case the doctors have tried to prepare his wife for the fact that he will never walk again. He has proven them wrong each time, but he doesn't "run" anywhere and it's been a long, long time since he's been able to leap from a deck and race across an open field.

But I knew who did act that way .... and every cop in a two hundred mile radius knew who he was. It didn't take too long to get T. H. out of the situation he'd found himself trapped in, but it required a little effort on my part and on his attorney's part. And the entire experience caused both T.H. and his wife to have nightmares for months. And it created a sense of insecurity and fear within everyone who knew the man. If such a thing could happen to T.H. then how much more could be done to any one of us?

As far as I was concerned, the state of Ohio should have been forced to reimburse T.H. his bond fee and his attorney fee, but they didn't. The whole sick game cost an innocent man about $5,000.00 while the real culprit was never even questioned. It all made me sick to my stomach, and shattered what little faith in "the system" that I had left.

Remember The Father And His Land

Yeah, I sure remembered the pay phone that Betty was talking about, and I knew exactly how it was all connected to me and to T. H. but how in the world was it connected to Jenifer McCrady?

There was only one possibility .... and I'd already beat that dead horse into dust.

Was this woman who knew nothing of either case "tuning in" to things she didn't understand? If so, what were the implications?

"Remember the father and his land."

The words just kept running through my mind. "The father." Who was Betty talking about? Did she even know who she was talking about?

I came up with three possibilities. First of all, I discounted Jackie McCrady's "father," because he owned no "land" that I was aware of except that which his house was situated upon.

Next I thought of Jenifer McCrady's "father." He was Doctor Barrett in Belpre, and he did have a nice piece of land where his home and veterinary business were located. But, I couldn't figure out how or why Dr. Barrett and his land would be emphasized to Betty or anyone else. It had to be someone else.

I thought of Wild Bill's "father" and his "land" .... he owned a pretty nice farm. But there again, what could he possibly have to do with Jenifer McCrady's death? Nothing, that's what. That was part of the dead horse I'd been beating for years. It didn't go anywhere, except that he turned a blind eye to everything his moronic son did.

And then, like a bolt out of the blue it hit me .....

"Remember the father and his land."

The Father And His Land

Cider

I have a friend named *Jude who has an uncle that rents land from Wild Bill's father on which he raises hogs. Wild Bill always hated those hogs and the smell that accompanied them. I understood why.

*Jude also had another uncle .... this one from her mother's side of the family. He was a Catholic priest ...."Father," they called him.

His last name contained the word "land." He was the priest that performed the wedding ceremony for Wild Bill's sister. He was also the priest of the church that Kimberly Fulton attended ...(but that's another story for later.)

Father ____land owned a farm located within ten minutes of where Wild Bill's parents lived. On his farm was a cabin. It sat 'high' upon the hill, above a lake and wooded area. It was here, just to the rear of the cabin that Jude had always buried her beloved pets.

Jude had phoned me and said she thought Zep was suffering from Gastric Torsion - a twisting of the stomach that sometimes occurs in large animals and is almost always fatal in the German Shepherd.

I had been concerned that entire day, and even though D.H. {T.H.'s wife} and I had gone to town together, I continued to worry about Zep and what was happening to him.

As D.H. and I were headed home, we passed Wild Bill in front of the Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant in Belpre and he waved at us. It sent cold chills down my back. It was the first time he'd tried to speak since he'd gotten out of jail in June. Our friendship had actually ended in March of that year, and after his sex crime in April I had refused to have anything to do with him, and had even stopped speaking to him.

Within seconds of passing Wild Bill, D.H. and I both noticed 3 lights in the sky. At first we thought it was vapor left from a jet, but as we drove closer and closer to home we realized it was not vapor. Eventually the lights took on a "cross" appearance, and seemed to move more and more toward my house! It was spooky and exciting all at the same time, and neither of us had ever seen anything quite like it.

Somehow we both sensed that the lights warned of something .... but what, and why 3, I wondered? D.H. departed for her house as soon as we arrived at mine, and I called my husband outside to "witness the event."

Zep died as D.H. and I raced for home on "September 19th," 1994. Jude took him to the farm and laid him to rest beside the other pets that she had loved and lost throughout her life.

Little did I know it at the time, but Jude saw the lights in the sky too! And she too felt they were warnings of "loss." It would turn out more correctly than any of us could have imagined.

Jude made a headstone for Zep's grave with the date of his birth and the date of his death.

I understood Jude's reasoning, and yet, for some reason I wished she had not put the date of his death. Anyone visiting that land could see the tombstone, and there were certain people who I felt already knew enough "dates" that were important to me and my family and friends.

Note: Zep was a "co-owned" dog. He was registered to "Jude" and me ... Bonnie M. "Wells." Everyone who knew Jude and me, knew that Zep belonged to both of us but lived with Jude his entire life. Dr. Barrett in Belpre was our Veterinarian at the time of Zep's death, and had been for many years prior to his death. Everyone who knew us was also aware of that fact.... especially Wild Bill.

Answers In The Wind

Cider

Time came and went. I thought I'd figured out the "lights in the sky" because in 1994 I lost my dad, Jude lost her dad and my husband lost his mother. I figured that was the "three" warnings. Now I realize there was even more to it than I'd originally thought, and believe it was a warning to each person who saw it, and that included D.H. as well as Jude and Mike. How Wild Bill fits into the picture, I can only speculate.

In August 1996, someone broke into Father ____land's cabin. Jude called me to tell me about the breaking and entering, but said it was not reported to the police. I don't suppose it would have mattered anyway.

She said she didn't know if anything was taken. The cabin was seldom used nowadays, and most of the family didn't even go out there anymore. Jude went to let her dogs run free and swim in the lake for awhile, or to take a hike in the woods that surrounded the cabin. But even she seldom spent the night there anymore, although at one time it was a regular camp-out for the large Catholic family.

Jude said the thing that attracted her attention was the garden hoe's. They had been placed in the yard in a strange arrangement. I remember we laughed about it at first and I said...."Sounds to me like someone is telling you that the 'ho's over the hill,' wrapped up and laid out cold!" It was funny....for awhile. Our fun never lasted long.

Another strange thing that bothered her was the fact that the "burglar" stole a huge bottle of cooking "oil" and poured it all around the base of the cabin ..... almost as if he intended to burn the place down .... but he didn't. There was no indication that anyone had actually tried to ignite the oil.

Next, the burglar went into a shed and obtained a fire extinguisher, which he then proceeded to empty around the cabin, and then threw the empty container on the ground just outside the kitchen door.

"What's the message? Is he emphasizing fire, or fighting fire? Is someone's house going to burn?" I asked Jude. She didn't know, and neither did I.
